At Ohiopyle State Park, in Pennsylvania's beautiful Laurel Highlands, Cucumber Run cascades 30 feet over a massive stone ledge into a shallow pool. It's close to the road and (relatively) easily accessible, so there are often many people about... just looking, or, in the heat of summer, wading and cooling off in the refreshing mountain waters. If you can catch a moment there alone, though, you'd believe you were miles and miles into the wilderness.

Just outside Chattanooga, Tennessee, Rock City Gardens has been charming and entertaining guests since the 1930s. It's an intriguing combination of the natural and the contrived. The setting, atop Lookout Mountain, is breathtaking, and the stone-paved walks and bridges take visitors under through and around wonderful rock formations; the gardens are, for the most part, groomed by humans but naturalized, and look very much at home in their mountaintop setting; the beautiful High Falls, pictured here, are actually man-made. Personally, I find the whole place rather charming.... and, it is, without a doubt, quite scenic...
My original photograph has been edited in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to correct some rather flat and harsh lighting... As a final touch, the little bit of sky at the top left, rather washed-out and featureless in the original, has been digitally replaced... I like the softer "cloudy-day" look of the finished image.

This cascading series of falls is just off the Pepeekeo Scenic Drive near Hilo, on the island of Hawaii. I took this photograph back in 2010, when we spent a week exploring the Big Island. Like most afternoons, this one went from sun, to cloud, to rain, and back again... the light, and the mood changed so fast and so frequently... Here, a shower had just passed through and the sky was still overcast, lending a soft light to the tropical scene.
